This later-production or ‘Second Model’ Henry Repeating Rifle presents in excellent condition. The stock shows no significant chips or scuffs. Notable features include the absence of an alternative rear sight cut and a pointed brass heel. Mechanically, the rifle uses a toggle-linked repeating action based on the Smith & Wesson Volcanic pistol design. Oliver Fisher Winchester acquired the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and soon hired Benjamin Tyler Henry to refine the unreliable Volcanic system. Henry’s successful redesign became the rifle that bore his name, and the foundation for Winchester’s rise. Collectors should note that the Colt Ring Rifle and Spencer both predate the New Haven Henry design, placing this example within the critical developmental window of repeating arms. Production of the Second Model was discontinued in 1866 after approximately 13,500 rifles were produced.
